D’ORIGIN Advisory, Louisa Rahardjo and Veni Fitriani – Indonesian stocks finished higher after swinging between gains and losses as investors digested the country’s slower but above consensus economic growth.

 

Jakarta composite added 14.302 points (+0.242%) to 5,920.594 with LQ45 added 0.33% at 944.708. Trading volume were 7.847 billion shares worth of Rp6.7 trillion including transaction of Rp1.77 trillion in negotiation market. Foreign investors purchased a net Rp761.96 billion in regular market during midday trade. 193 shares rose, while 224 declined, 126 unchanged and 130 untraded.

 

The Indonesian economy advanced 5.17% year-on-year in the third quarter of 2018, slightly beating market consensus of 5.15% and following a 5.27% growth in the previous period. Meanwhile, gross domestic product grew 3.09% quarter-on-quarter in the September of 2018, slightly above market estimates of 3.07% and after a 4.21% expansion in the previous period.

 

According to JISDOR, the currency soared 115 points (+0.76%) to 14,972, while Spot rate slipped 25 cents (-0.17%) at 14,975.00 against the USD.

 

Asia and European stocks were mostly lower on Monday as investors remained cautious over global growth prospects while Chinese President Xi Jinping tried to position China as globalization champion in a major speech. Investors also look ahead central banks decision this week.

 

Oil prices fell on Monday as the start to U.S. sanctions against Iran’s fuel exports was softened by waivers that will allow some countries to still import Iranian crude. Brent crude slipped 14 cents (-0.19%) to $72.69 per barrel while U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude futures fell 26 cents (-0.41%) to $62.88 per barrel.
