D’ORIGIN, Louisa Rahardjo and Veni Fitriani – Indonesian stocks traded lower as the market reopened after Christmas break amid economic turmoil in global markets. Seven sectors fell with miscellaneous industries and agriculture stocks tumbled more than 2%.

Jakarta composite index fell 35.746 points (-0.58%) to 6,127.85 with LQ45 declined 0.92 % at 980.05. Trading volume were 15.878 billion shares worth of Rp11.838 trillion including transaction of Rp7.43 trillion in negotiation market. According to JISDOR, the currency tumbled 122 points (-0.84%) to 14,602, while Spot rate slipped 20 points (-0.14%) to 14,570.00 against the USD.

Asian stocks closed mixed with Japanese and Indian markets turned higher while markets in Korea and Singapore remained under pressure as concerns over political uncertainties in U.S. continued to linger. In the meantime, markets in Europe remained shut for Christmas holidays.

Stateside, President Donald Trump marked Christmas Day by insisting the shutdown of the US government will last until his demand for funds to build a wall on the US-Mexico border is met. On other news, Donald Trump on Tuesday continued his spate of open criticism of the Federal Reserve, saying the central bank was hiking interest rates too quickly.

In energy markets, oil prices were mixed after slumping to their weakest levels in more than a year. Brent added 5 cents (+0.10%) to $50.52 per barrel while U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude added 53 cents (+1.08%) to $42.99 per barrel.
