D’ORIGIN Advisory, Louisa Rahardjo and Veni Fitriani – Indonesian stocks kicked off 2019 on negative note amid Indonesia’s inflation data and China’s PMI release while economic challenges from internal and external will continue looming this year.

 

Jakarta composite index slipped 13.324 points (-0.215%) to 6,181.175 while LQ45 added 0.16% at 984.346. Trading volume were 15.264 billion shares worth of Rp7.48 trillion including transaction of Rp3.56 trillion in negotiation market. Foreign investors purchased a net Rp203.45 billion in regular market. 168 shares rose, while 275 declined, 130 unchanged and 117 untraded.

 

Indonesia’s annual consumer price inflation eased to a three-month low of 3.13% in December of 2018 from 3.23% in the previous month, but beating market expectations of 2.96%. Annual core inflation rose to a 14-month high of 3.07% in December from 3.03% in November and in line with market consensus. On a monthly basis, consumer prices went up 0.62%, after a 0.27% gain in November, missing expectations of a 0.48% rise.

 

According to JISDOR, the currency added 16 points (+0.11%) to 14,465, while Spot rate fell 70 points (-0.49%) to 14,445.00 against the USD.

 

Global stocks tumbled along with U.S. futures on the back of contraction in China’s December manufacturing activity while Japanese markets remained shut for public holiday.

 

The China’s Caixin/Markit Manufacturing Purchasing Managers’ index fell to 49.7 in December from 50.2 in November. Analysts’ in a Reuters poll predicted the PMI to come in at 50.1 in December.

 

From Euro area, Manufacturing PMI in Germany decreased to 51.50 in December from 51.80 in November of 2018.

 

In energy markets, oil prices fell on the first trading day of the year with Brent slipped 81 cents (-1.51%) to $52.99 per barrel while U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude fell 72 cents (-1.59%) to $44.69 per barrel.
