Indonesian stocks retreated from its eight-month high as profit taking continued with investors watched the development of trade talks. Seven sectors gave up recent gains while infrastructure stocks rose more than 1%.

 

Jakarta composite index slipped 24.377 points (-0.388%) to 6,262.847 while LQ45 declined 0.54% at 997.424. Trading volume were 11.385 billion shares worth of Rp8.49 trillion including transaction of Rp1.69 trillion in negotiation market. Foreign investors purchased a net Rp310.04 billion in regular market. 219 shares rose, while 217 declined, 141 unchanged and 114 untraded.

 

According to JISDOR, the currency rose 74 points (+0.52%) to 14,031, while Spot rate slipped 55 points (-0.39%) to 14,140.00 against the USD.

 

Asian stocks were mixed while Europeans opened higher amid the second day of U.S – China trade negotiations with China said on Monday that it is willing to resolve its trade disputes with the U.S. on an equal footing.

 

In terms of data, Australia’s trade surplus narrowed to AUD 1.93 billion in November 2018, below the downwardly revised AUD 2.01 billion in the previous month, while in Japan, Confidence Index inched down to 42.7 in December 2018 from 42.9 in the previous month, the lowest reading since November 2016. In the Euro area, there will be business confidence and consumer confidence numbers later in the day.

 

Oil prices climbed amid hopes on the outcomes of U.S – China trade talks. Meanwhile, crude oil prices have benefited from OPEC production cuts that started late 2019. Brent added 29 cents (+0.51%) to $57.62 per barrel while U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude climbed 16 cents (+0.33%) to $48.68 per barrel.
