D’ORIGIN – Louisa Rahardjo and Veni Fitriani, Indonesian stocks surged on Wednesday after economic growth beat forecast. All sectors increased with infrastructure soared as much as 2.88%.

 

Jakarta composite index rose 66.426 points (+1.025%) to 6,543.116 with LQ45 jumped 1.13% at 1,035.635. Trading volume were 13.934 billion shares worth of Rp10.184 trillion including transaction of Rp2.43 trillion in negotiation market. Foreign investors purchased a net Rp97.27 billion in regular market during midday trade. 279 shares rose, while 187 declined, 128 unchanged and 104 untraded.

 

Indonesia’s annual economic growth edged up to 5.18% in the fourth quarter of 2018 from 5.17% in the previous three-month period and slightly above market consensus of 5.11%. For 2018 as a whole, the economy grew 5.17%, compared to a 5.07% expansion in 2017, and marking the fastest since 2013.

 

According to JISDOR, the currency added 27 points (+0.21%) to 13,947, while Spot rate rose 33 points (+0.237%) to 13,917.00 against the USD.

 

Stocks in Asia rose on hopes for trade developments following Trump’s State of the Union address saying that the only things that can stop a strong U.S. economy “are foolish wars, politics or ridiculous partisan investigations.” Meanwhile, Europeans stocks retreated amid worries for slowing economic following a drop in German factory orders.

 

Markets in China, Hong Kong, Korea, Malaysia, Singapore and Taiwan remained shut for Lunar New Year.

 

On the data front, German industrial orders dropped unexpectedly by 1.6% month-over-month in December 2018, missing market expectations of a 0.3% rise and after a downwardly revised 0.2% fall in November. This was the second straight month of decline in factory orders and the steepest since June, amid decreases in both domestic and foreign demand.

 

Oil prices swung with Brent fell 51 points (-0.82%) at $61.47 per barrel while U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude declined 42 cents (-0.78%) to $53.24 per barrel.
