D’ORIGIN – Louisa Rahardjo and Veni Fitriani, Indonesian stocks fell with rupiah slumped on Friday as markets across the globe took a hit on economic slowdown following China’s trade data after ECB slashed its growth forecasts.
Jakarta composite index tumbled 74.889 points (-1.16%) to 6,383.068 with LQ45 tumbled 1.42% at 994.980. Trading volume were 16.657 billion shares worth of Rp9.241 trillion including transaction of Rp2.81 trillion in negotiation market. Foreign investors sold a net Rp593.19 billion in regular market. 138 shares rose, while 296 declined, 144 unchanged, and 123 untraded.
Bank Indonesia announced Foreign exchange reserves stood at US$120.1 billion in January, slightly down from $120.7 billion the previous month. It was equal to the financing of 6.7 months of imports or 6.5 months of imports and payment of the government’s short-term external debt, well above international standards of three months of imports.
According to JISDOR, the currency fell 94 points (-0.66%) to 14,223, while Spot rate tumbled 170 points (-1.20%) to 14,305.00 against the USD.
Asian stock dropped with China’s index slumped more than 4% after China on Friday reported worse than expected trade data for the month of February amid trade dispute with the U.S. Meanwhile in Europe, stocks were also lower with investors still digesting an announcement from the European Central Bank Thursday.
China’s February trade balance was significantly weaker than expected at $4.12 billion. Economists polled by Reuters had expected the overall trade balance to come in at $26.38 billion. The country’s trade balance in January had been $39.16 billion. Dollar-denominated exports plunged 20.7%, missing economists’ expectations of a 4.8% decline while imports fell 5.2% in February from a year ago missing economists’ forecast of a 1.4% fall.
On Thursday, President Mario Draghi announced a fresh round of loans to boost lending in euro zone banks and said that interest rates will continue to remain at current levels for at least until the end of the year as the central bank cut its growth forecast from 1.7 to 1.1% this year.
Oil prices retreated amid worries over economic slowdown. Brent fell 89 cents (-1.34%) at $65.41 per barrel while U.S. West Texas Intermediate fell 62 cents (-1.04%) to $56.07 barrel.
