D’ORIGIN – Louisa Rahardjo and Veni Fitriani, Indonesian shares slumped on U.S. – China trade dispute and as Indonesia’s gross domestic product grew slower-than-expected in the first quarter.
Jakarta composite index fell 72.491 points (-1.147%) to 6,246.978 while LQ45 slumped 1.56% at 981.715. Trading volume were 6.956 billion shares worth of Rp4.048 trillion including transaction of Rp682.48 billion in negotiation market. Foreign investors sold a net Rp383.78 billion in regular market during midday trade. Only 96 shares rose, while 309 declined, 121 unchanged, and 183 untraded.
Indonesia’s economy expanded 5.07% in January-March from a year earlier, the slowest pace in a year, compared with a median poll of 5.18% and below the pace reported in the fourth quarter of 2018. Quarterly, the economy contracted 0.52% in the first quarter.
According to JISDOR, rupiah fell 26 points (-0.18%) at 14,308 while Spot rate declined 75 points (-0.53%) to 14,325 against the USD.
Southeast Asian stocks plunged on Monday as trade tensions between the world’s two largest economies re-escalated after U.S. President Donald Trump said he would impose tariffs increase in tariffs on $200 billion of Chinese goods.
Meanwhile, China is considering cancelling its trade talks with the U.S. this week in response of Trump’s latest threats.
Oil prices also tumbled on the trade dispute with Brent declined $1.4 cents (-1.98%) at $69.45 per barrel while U.S. West Texas Intermediate slumped $1.34 (-2.16%) to $60.60 a barrel.
