
Indonesia’s Economic Growth Slows More than Expected, Stocks Edge Lower
Indonesian finished slightly lower after Indonesia’s economy decelerated in the third quarter amid mobility curbs.
Jakarta composite slipped 4.658 points (-0.071%) to 6,581.785 with LQ45 fell 0.02% to 947.968. There were 18.194 billion shares traded worth of Rp12.33 trillion, including transaction of Rp3.785 trillion in negotiation market. Foreign investors bought a net Rp55.2 billion in regular market. 206 shares rose while 301 declined and 164 unchanged.
Gross domestic product in the quarter rose 3.51% from a year ago, the statistics bureau announced Friday, down from 7.07% growth in the second quarter, as the virus wave peaked in July and August. That undershot both the median estimate of 3.88% in a Bloomberg survey of economists and the government’s projection of 4.5%.
In the meantime, investors continued to focus on the latest round of corporate earnings.
According to JISDOR released Friday afternoon, Rupiah retreated 47 points (-0.33%) at 14,374 while spot rate added 10 points (+0.07%) to 14,325.
Stocks were mostly lower in Asia with Hong Kong led losses weighed down by concerns over property developer.
In Europe, stocks swung as investors digested central bank decision and awaited U.S. data.
Shares of Kaisa Group Holdings Ltd. and several units were suspended in Hong Kong on Friday, a day after the developer flagged liquidity pressure and said it missed payments on wealth products it guaranteed.
The Bank of England surprised markets on Thursday by holding interest rates at historic lows, after the U.S. Federal Reserve announced Wednesday that it will begin to curb the pace of its monthly bond-buying program by end of November.
Stateside, investors geared up for the highly anticipated October jobs report, with nonfarm payrolls expected to have increased by 450,000 across the month. The U.S. economy added 194,000 jobs in September, far short of the 500,000 projection.
Oil prices jumped after OPEC+ agreed to continue with their current output plan to gradually increase oil production by 400,000 barrels per day each month. Brent rose 82 cents (+1.02%) at $81.36 per barrel and U.S WTI added $1.28 (+1.62%) at $80.09 a barrel.
