3Q Current Account Surplus Biggest in 12 Years, Stocks Ends at Record High

Jakarta composite soared 87.794 points (+1.263%) to all-time high of 6,720.263. LQ45 jumped 1.87% to 963.644. There were 31.575 billion shares traded worth of Rp14.625 trillion, including transaction of Rp2.33 trillion in negotiation market. Foreign investors were net buyers of Rp474.03 billion in regular market. 301 shares rose while 203 declined and 166 unchanged.

Indonesia’s third-quarter current account racked up a surplus of US$4.5 billion or 1.5% of GDP, the largest in 12 years, as merchandise exports got a boost from high commodity prices, central bank data showed on Friday.

On Thursday, BI Governor Perry Warjiyo sounded upbeat about the economic outlook, expecting activity to pick up in the fourth quarter and in 2022 compared to this year. The central bank previously predicted growth of 3.5% to 4.3% this year.

According to JISDOR released Friday afternoon, Rupiah slipped 6 points (-0.04%) at 14,237 while spot rate slipped 10 points (+0.07%) to 14,235.

Global stocks continue to hover near records, propped up by robust U.S. corporate earnings growth while inflation pressures accelerate interest-rate hikes and hamper the pandemic recovery are shadowing markets.

In Europe, stocks were higher while concerns about new winter wave of covid-19 starting to grow with a number of countries seeing record numbers of daily infections, imposing partial lockdowns and placing more restrictions on unvaccinated people.

Markets in Japan and South Korea were up while stocks in Hong Kong and tumbled as Alibaba Group Holding Ltd. sank over 10% on a slashed revenue outlook, contributing to a drop in a gauge of Chinese technology shares.

Data released earlier in the day said that the Japan’s consumer price index and core CPI both grew 0.1% year-on-year in October.

U.K. retail sales increased 0.8% month-on-month in October, slightly exceeding the expectations of 0.5% increase.  GfK’s latest consumer confidence index also unexpectedly rose to -14 from -17 in October.

Stateside, the U.S. House of Representatives is set to vote on the Democratic Party’s $2 trillion spending bill.

U.S. Treasury yields edged up and a dollar gauge remained on course for a fourth weekly advance. Commodities including crude oil, iron ore and copper pushed higher.

Brent rose 67 cents (+0.82%) at $81.91 per barrel and U.S WTI rose 70 cents (+0.89%) at $79.71 a barrel.
