
Indonesian stocks turned higher on Friday amid foreign inflows alongside with its currency.
Jakarta composite added 23.304 points (+0.381%) to 6,133.246 while LQ45 declined 0.96% to 854.415. There were 30.963 billion shares traded worth of Rp16.314 trillion, including transaction of Rp1.419 trillion in negotiation market. Foreign investors purchased a net Rp584.93 billion in regular market. 216 shares rose while 295 declined and 147 unchanged.
During the week, index managed to add 33.373 points (+0.63%) while rupiah strengthened 25 points or 0.18%.
Hong Kong conglomerate CK Hutchison Holdings has inked a deal with ISAT to merge their respective telecommunications businesses in Indonesia and will be named Indosat Ooredoo Hutchison. It will be the second largest mobile telecoms company in the country, with an estimated annual revenue of approximately US$3 billion. Currently, Ooredoo Group has a controlling 65% shareholding in ISAT through Ooredoo Asia. The merger of ISAT will result in CK Hutchison receiving newly issued shares in ISAT amounting to 21.8% and PT Tiga Telekomunikasi Indonesia amounting to 10.8% of the merged Indosat Ooredoo Hutchison business.
BBYB advanced more than 5% ahead of an extraordinary general meeting of shareholders to request shareholders’ approval regarding BBYB acquisition by AKulaku.
According to JISDOR released Friday afternoon, Rupiah added 5 points (+0.04%) at 14,233 while spot rate added 25 points (+0.18%) at 14,225.
Stocks in Asia and Europe were mixed while Europeans advanced with investors weighing the impact of China’s latest regulatory tightening alongside the prospect of reduced U.S. Federal Reserve stimulus following U.S. economic data.
Data on Friday showed that U.K. retail sales fell unexpectedly in August, dropping 0.9% month on month against a Reuters average forecast for a 0.5% rise. The fourth consecutive monthly decline marks the longest negative streak since records began.
Stateside, the Census Bureau reported Thursday that August’s retail sales increased 0.7% for the month against the Dow Jones estimate of a decline of 0.8%. The initial estimate for July, however, was revised down to a decline of nearly 2% from a month-over-month gain of 0.5%. Meanwhile, the latest unemployment insurance weekly data showed 332,000 first-time jobless claims last week, higher than the Dow Jones estimate of 320,000.
Oil futures dipped on Friday but Brent held above $75 a barrel, remaining on track for weekly gains of more than 3% thanks to the slow recovery in output after two hurricanes in the U.S. Gulf of Mexico. Brent crude declined 56 cents (-0.74%) at $75.11 per barrel and U.S WTI fell 61 cents (-0.84%) at $72.00 barrel. The U.S. Energy Information Administration showed U.S. crude exports in September have slipped to between 2.34 million bpd and 2.62 million bpd from 3 million bpd in late August.
