D’ORIGIN – Louisa Rahardjo and Veni Fitriani,
Indonesian stocks retreated for a fourth day, with index rested below psychological level of 6,500 as investors looked ahead on the prospects of trade deal and as Bank Indonesia reported current account deficit widened in 2018 but the balance of payments returned to a surplus for the first time in a year.
Jakarta composite index slipped 26.661 points (-0.409%) to 6,495.002 with LQ45 fell 0.70% at 1,020.758. Trading volume were 14.395 billion shares worth of Rp7.815 trillion including transaction of Rp1.85 trillion in negotiation market. Bank Indonesia reported over the weekend that the current account deficit increased to US$31.1 billion, 2.98% of GDP, in 2018 from the previous year, which stood at $17.29 billion, 1.7% of GDP. The current account deficit widened 64.3% to $9.1 billion in Q4 2018 from a $5.6 billion gap a year earlier. It was the largest current account deficit since Q2 2014, as the goods account switched to a $2,576 million shortfall from a $3,086 million surplus a year earlier, mainly due to a 12% surge in imports and a 1% drop in exports.
However, a surplus of US$5.4 billion was recorded in balance of payments in the fourth quarter of 2018 after suffering from deficits in previous quarters, according to the central bank.
According to JISDOR, the currency retreated 3 points (-0.02) to 13,995, while Spot rate fell 75 points (-0.54%) to 14,035.00 against the USD.
