D’ORIGIN – Louisa Rahardjo and Veni Fitriani, Indonesian stocks traded cautiously on Thursday amid sinking rupiah and continued outflows from foreign investors.
Jakarta composite index finished slightly higher 0.902 point (+0.01%) to 6,420.018 with LQ45 fell 0.34% at 1,000.773. Trading volume were 15.61 billion shares worth of Rp9.96 trillion including transaction of Rp2.14 trillion in negotiation market. Foreign investors sold a net Rp816.92 billion in regular market. 171 shares rose, while 271 declined, 130 unchanged, and 126 untraded.
According to JISDOR, the currency fell 66 points (-0.47%) to 14,093, while Spot rate fell 30 points (-0.21%) to 14,085.00 against the USD.
Asian stocks were on Thursday while Europeans opened higher as investors awaited the outcome of high-level trade talks between the U.S. and China while the U.S. dollar held overnight gains.
On the data front, Japan’s gross domestic product grew at an annualized rate of 1.4% in the October to December period last year, in line with expectation. Meanwhile, Chinese data showed China’s trade surplus widened sharply to USD 39.16 billion in January 2019 from USD 18.42 billion in the same month a year earlier and well above market consensus of USD 33.5 billion. Year-on-year, exports increased by 9.1% while imports declined by 1.5%. However, the trade surplus with the US narrowed to USD 27.30 billion in January from USD 29.87 billion in December with exports to the country declined 2.4% year-on-year and imports declined at a faster 41.2%.
Overnight, reports showed the annual inflation rate in the United Kingdom fell to 1.8% in January 2019 from 2.1% in the previous month and below market expectations of 1.9%. It was the lowest inflation rate since January 2017, mostly due to a slowdown in cost of electricity, gas and other fuels.
Oil prices extended gains with Brent added 108 points (+1.81%) at $64.76 per barrel while U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude added 74 cents (+1.37%) to $54.64 per barrel.
