D’ORIGIN Advisory, Louisa Rahardjo and Veni Fitriani, Indonesian shares jumped as Indonesia’s trade deficit narrowed in December. All but agriculture sectors rose while basic industry soared more than 2%.
Jakarta composite index rose 72.668 (+1.147%) to 6,408.784 while LQ45 rose 1.16% at 1,019.297. Trading volume were 17.575 billion shares worth of Rp10.783 trillion including transaction of Rp2.904 trillion in negotiation market. Foreign investors purchased a net Rp2.9 trillion in regular market during midday trade. 248 shares rose, while 183 declined, 150 unchanged and 113 untraded.
Indonesia’s trade deficit narrowed in December, but it was wider than market had expected due to a further drop in exports. Trade deficit widened to US$1.10 billion in December 2018 from US$240 million in the same month a year earlier and beating market consensus of a US$930 million gap. It was the third straight month trade gap, as exports went down 4.62% to US$14.18 billion, missing expectations of 1.81% rise. Meanwhile, imports rose 1.16% to US$15.28 billion, below forecasts of a 6.6% gain.
According to JISDOR, the currency slid 32 points (-0.23%) to 14,084, while Spot rate added 35 points (+0.248%) to 14,085.00 against the USD.
Asian stocks recovered despite negative lead from Wall Street amid earnings season. Meanwhile, concerns over economic slowdown in China remained lingering. In Europe, stocks were also higher with market focus is largely attuned to an all-important vote on Prime Minister Theresa May’s much-maligned Brexit deal on Tuesday.
On the data front, the German economy grew by 1.5% in 2018, following a 2.2% expansion in 2017 and matching market expectations. It was the weakest growth rate in five years amid a global economic slowdown, persistent trade tensions with the US and the risk of Britain leaving the EU without a deal.
Oil prices as OPEC and Russia cut supply and Iran is restrained by sanctions. In the meantime crude oil production in the United States hit a record 11.7 million barrels per day late last year. Brent rose 28 cents (+0.47%) to $59.27 per barrel while U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude added 31 cents (+0.61%) to $50.82 per barrel.
