Indonesian stocks soared for a second day with investors expecting a rate cut on Bank Indonesia rate decision due tomorrow.
Jakarta composite index rose 81.932 points (+1.309%) to 6,339.262 while LQ45 soared 1.68% at 1,011.482. There were 16.83 billion shares traded worth of Rp10.489 trillion, including transaction of Rp2.58 trillion in negotiation market. Foreign investors bought a net Rp730.1 billion in regular market. 287 shares rose, while 173 declined, 132 unchanged, and 125 untraded.
According to JISDOR, rupiah added 63 points (+0.44%) at 14,271 while Spot added 55 points (+0.38%) at 14,265 against the USD.
Stocks in Asia surged while European stocks edged lower with Federal Reserve’s rate decision is set to be announced later in the day. In the meantime, investors are expecting a rate cut and positive improvement on U.S – China trade dispute.
On the data front, Japan posted a trade deficit of JPY 967 billion in May 2019 compared with a JPY 577 billion shortfall in the same month a year earlier and market expectations of a JPY 979 billion gap. Exports fell 7.8% from a year earlier to JPY 5.84 trillion in May 2019, compared to market consensus of a 7.7% drop and after a after a 2.4% fall in April. It was the sixth straight month of falls in shipments, amid weakening global demand and the US-China trade dispute. Imports declined 1.5% year-on-year to JPY 6.80 trillion in May 2019, compared to market expectations of a 0.2% increase and following a 6.4% rise in the previous month.
In Europe, the inflation rate in the United Kingdom edged down to 2% year-on-year in May 2019 from a four-month high of 2.1% in the previous month and in line with market expectations.
Oil prices retreated after the American Petroleum Institute reported U.S. crude stocks fell by 812,000 barrels last week to 482 million, a smaller fall than the 1.1 million barrel drop analysts had expected. Brent fell 55 cents (-0.89%) at $61.59 per barrel while U.S. West Texas Intermediate slipped 18 cents (-0.33%) to $53.72 a barrel.
