JCI ends first quarter flat; Rupiah at 2-month high

 

• China’s official non-manufacturing PMI soared to 58.2 in March from 56.3 in February.
• Retail sales in Germany unexpectedly declined by 1.3% month-over-month in February of 2023.
• The United Kingdom economy expanded slightly by 0.1% on quarter in the final three months of 2022.

 

Indonesian shares little changed on the final session of the first quarter despite gains in global markets.

 

Jakarta composite slipped 3.67 points (-0.054%) to 6,805.28 while LQ45 declined 1.93 points to 937.68.

 

There were 16.286 billion shares traded worth of Rp9.58 trillion, including transaction of Rp530.35 billion in negotiation market. 297 shares rose while 320 declined and 237 unchanged.

 

According to JISDOR on Friday, rupiah was at 14,977, added 32 points (+0.21%), while spot rate added 55 points (+0.37%) at 14,990.

 

PGUN plans to purchase palm oil plantation assets owned by PT Langgai Agrindo Agung and PT Bumi Paser Agrindo with a total transaction of Rp235.63 billion.

 

IMAS and Inchape Motors Private Limited acquired 100% of Mercedes-Benz in Indonesia. In detail, Inchcape took over 70% and Indomobil 30%.

 

The two companies formed a joint venture for Mercedes-Benz assembly and distribution activities in Indonesia.

 

On corporate news, ENRG posted a net profit of $66.75 million (Rp1 trillion) for 2022, grew 65.9% from net profit in 2021 which was only $40.23 million. Revenue increased 11.3% to $451.93 million.

 

LTLS reported 16.96% increase in 2022 net profit at Rp274.45 billion.

 

SGRO recorded a net profit of Rp1.04 trillion in 2022, grew 30.79% from previous year.

 

Global market

 

Asia-Pacific markets rose on Friday, with tech stocks climbing after similar gains on Wall Street.

 

European stock markets nudged higher at Friday’s open, ahead of the U.S. inflation print coming in the afternoon.

 

China’s official non-manufacturing Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI) soared to 58.2 in March from 56.3 in February, marking the best level since 2011, according to the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS).

 

In Europe, retail sales in Germany unexpectedly declined by 1.3% month-over-month in February of 2023, missing market estimates of a 0.5% growth and following a 0.3% drop in the previous month.

 

The United Kingdom economy expanded slightly by 0.1% on quarter in the final three months of 2022, revised from a first estimate of no growth and following a 0.1% contraction in the previous period.

 

On the policy front, the European Central Bank is seen pushing on with further rate hikes, but those might come at a slower pace due to recent troubles in the financial system.

 

On Friday, investors will also see a flash estimate of euro zone and French inflation.

 

U.S. stock futures were mixed ahead of a key inflation print.

 

The Federal Reserve’s preferred inflation gauge, the personal consumption expenditures index, is due to be released later today. Economists polled by Dow Jones expect that the core PCE, which excludes energy and food costs, gained 0.4% in February from the prior month and added 4.7% on an annualized basis.

Personal income data, consumer spending and the final March reading of the University of Michigan’s consumer sentiment index will also be issued later in the day.

 

Several central bank officials are also scheduled to speak Friday, including Fed Governors Lisa Cook and Christopher Waller.

 

Commodities

 

Oil prices ticked down in Asian trade on Friday as bullish sentiment about Chinese demand and potential Middle Eastern supply disruptions was tempered by uncertainty over U.S. economic data to be released later in the day.

 

Gold steadied and was set to gain more than 8% in March, as investors wagered that interest rates have likely reached near their peak in this tightening cycle.

 

Malaysian palm oil futures eased after four days of gains on profit taking, but are set for a weekly rise amid output concerns.

 

The benchmark palm oil contract FCPOc3 for June delivery on the Bursa Malaysia Derivatives Exchange fell 0.53% to 3,788 ringgit early in the session, erasing some of the 7.67% gains over the past four days.
