JCI falls as recession worries weigh
Indonesian stocks declined amid selloff in global market on the back of weaker-than-expected economic data that supported forecasts for recession. Market will be closed tomorrow for Good Friday.
Jakarta composite retreated 26.91 points (-0.39%) to 6,792.76 while LQ45 declined 3.49 points (0.37%) to 937.20 There were 22 billion shares traded worth of Rp21.82 trillion, including transaction of Rp13.76 trillion in negotiation market. 238 shares rose while 385 declined and 248 unchanged.
According to JISDOR on Thursday, rupiah was at 14,943, weakened 10 points (-0.07%), while spot rate added 10 points (+0.07%) at 14,910.
Corporate news
TLKM has signed a business restructuring agreement that involves spinning off its internet and digital services business segment, IndiHome. Based on the Conditional Spin-Off Agreement, the estimated value of IndiHome’s separated business segment is Rp58.249.920.571.200 (Rp58.24 trillion).
There has been a negotiation transaction involving INCO shares worth of Rp12.72 trillion. The transaction is believed to signify MIND ID’s divestment of an 11% stake in INCO.
CMRY will distribute cash dividends of Rp70 per share, represent 55.37% of 2022 net profit. Recording date will be April 26.
Global market
Asia-Pacific markets largely amid a drop in U.S. stock futures after Wall Street closed mainly lower overnight overnight as data showed U.S. private employers hired far fewer workers than expected in March.
The Caixin China General Services PMI increased to 57.8 in March 2023 from 55.0 in February, pointing to the fastest pace of expansion in activity since last November 2020, boosted by a sharp rise in new orders and employment, following the recent easing of COVID-19 measures. The Composite PMI increased to 54.5 in March 2023 from 54.2 in the prior month.
Australia’s trade surplus increased to A$13.87 billion in February 2023 from a downwardly revised A$11.27 billion in January, topping market forecasts for a gain of A$11.10 billion. This was the largest trade surplus since June 2022 with shipments declined by 2.9% from the previous month while imports tumbled by 9.0%.
India’s central bank held its benchmark interest rate, or its policy repurchase rate, at 6.50%, defying expectations for the Reserve Bank of India to hike 25 basis points
In Europe, Industrial production in Germany surged 2% month-over-month in February of 2023, beating market forecasts of a meagre 0.1% gain.
The S&P Global Eurozone Construction PMI dropped to 45.0 in March 2023, down from 47.6 the month before, indicating an 11th consecutive monthly contraction in activity levels across the sector that was the sharpest in three months.
U.S. Stock futures contracts tied to the three major indices were trading around the flat line on Thursday as investors will watch Thursday for jobless claims data for more insights into the strength of the labor market. St. Louis Fed President James Bullard is also slated to speak in the morning in Arkansas.
Thursday will cap off a shortened trading week with the market closed for Good Friday. But investors will still follow Friday’s data on nonfarm payrolls, the unemployment rate and hourly wages.
Commodities
Oil fell on Thursday as weak U.S. economic data raised concerns over a potential global recession and demand reduction, but benchmark prices were headed for a weekly advance after OPEC+ announced further output cuts and U.S. oil stocks dropped.
Gold eased from near its highest levels in a year amid a firm US dollar ahead of Friday’s non-farm payroll data for March, with traders looking for clarity on the Federal Reserve’s next move on its monetary tightening path.
Malaysian palm oil extended declines. The benchmark palm oil contract FCPOc3 for June delivery on the Bursa Malaysia Derivatives Exchange slipped 25 ringgit, or 0.65%, to 3,868 ringgit a tonne.
